| The American Cancer Society
has generated standards which call for screening for colorectal
cancer beginning at age 50 for all individuals. If you have a family
history of colorectal cancer, the American Cancer Society standards
state that screening should begin at age 40.
Colorectal cancer is a very curable and survivable
disease if detected early and yet has a high fatality rate without
early detection. Despite the fact that the medical community has
been well aware of the need for screening for early detection of
colorectal cancer for many years, many physicians still fail to
advise their patients to undergo the relatively simple and potentially
life-saving screening procedures for colorectal cancer.
If you or a loved one are over 50 and have been diagnosed
with colorectal cancer and had never been screened or advised to
be screened by your physician beginning at age 50 (or age 40 if
you have a family history of colorectal cancer), you may have a
claim against your physician. Further, in some cases, physicians
recommend screenings based upon certain high risk factors starting
as early as puberty.
